If .999.... really did equal 1 then 0 would equal .00000......infinitley....1. This cant be true though. Say something shrinks every year and can be modeled by the equation f(x)=1/(10x) where x equals the number of years. After 100 years it would be 1/(10100) which is pretty tiney. If you let this go on infinitely it would become infinetely small. This would equal .0000 infinitely...1. Even though this is really tiney and infinitly small it still exists. Zero means that something does not exist. Therefore .00000.....1 does not equal 0 and 1 does not equal .999999
