What? Teachers assign books to students. Certain books they must read. And usually those books suck. Barretta's right. The only problem is that kids think all books are like that.
"Oh shit, people don't read enough."
You mean, people don't read books because text is far more accessible on a computer.

"Oh god, the internet is making people read less!"
Nope.
Never said that. Kids don't read on the internet much either. I said not just books, but anything on the internet.

So your saying you cant choose your own books bexause teachers assign books to you? You cant choose books on your own? If so me and you must have two VERY different schools
Your signature has been banned because it draws in hate. Thank you, Toribash Community.
Schools usually do have shitty required reading

i think its really upbringing i read a shitton and enjoy it because i grew up with my parents reading to me and then encouraging me to read and limiting the time i spent watching tv

if parents dont encourage reading and let the kids play tons of videogames and watch tv then reading will seem boring and they will look at it as a chore not something that they want to do

the media doesnt help

Why would a kid writing to another kid be expected to write in formal style..?

Since it's not used in anything important, just some teens that had to shorten a text so they don't pay too much. And it just kind of stuck.

Trying to push the "only teens txt" stereotype again I see, didn't I already elaborately explain?
Besides, go lurk some twitter and you will see everyone from Oprah to Palin using txt speak to gain speed.

Once again, you are saying they are too lazy to put in the effort.
Thus you are saying it takes more effort to read than watch a movie.

It seems like you are trying to shoehorn your opinion on to everyone. You alone find txt speak annoying. Everyone else finds it fast and effective, easier and quicker to read than formal English.

Aha, now we are at the crux of the issue.

If you don't think reading is better, then why should kids read more?
I am a kid and I read A LOT but if im forced to read something I hate it. But yeah I am also picky soo. Some kids ready enough, some not
I am a kid, and I read sometimes. I am also really picky with books, like everyone else in this thread is.

But when it comes to kids overall, I would say they don't read that much.
