Umm, marriage is also a religious practice, so are 'civil unions'. the whole monogamy thing comes from christianity/catholocism/ignorance. America would probably still be full of natives if christianity never got to europe (more specifically england). Most of europe and england were pagans, large numbers of whom were polygamists and/or polyamorists, so even if they had colonised America this whole issue would not exist, and the world would quite probably be a much better place.

Civil unions are a religious practice? News to me.
And monogamous unions are as old as mankind...
I have trouble seeing your point.
I don't get the point on gay marriage. What are the benefits you guys are referring to of being a couple recognized by the state? I'll tell you what marriage is good nowadays for: To get divorced and get/lose half the wealth of your partner.
People get married likely to make that his/her partner is not planning to leave any time soon. Call me narrow minded, I prefer being called careless.
They can go get a civil union contract. No point in religion, you've made it clear already.

Now as far as adoption theme goes, I'm not sure it's a good idea. From the human side it's a fine. But it should be studied by psychologists whether it will affect the infant's growth and perception of the world. That depends on the age at wich they be adopted. I know people born in families where their mothers turn out to be lesbians, curiously, sons are all masculine and their mothers don't live with their couple. And they don't know the sexual reality of they parents until they are 12 or so.

I think I've got a good idea. Let gay folks adopt children. But no younger than 7, and, if they're men, let them adopt a girl, if they are women, let them have a boy. Now something else shows up in my head: could that image of gay parents cause, for example in a girl with homosexual men parents, a deformation in her perception of men and make them look like not attractive from a sexual stand point in the future?
It's not an easy subject.. I've seen some odlov posts, they're mostly complex themes :P

I personally think its wrong because I dont believe that it right but from an ethical standpoint the kid has a family. the only thing I am worried about is the fact that kids are cruel and will most likely make fun of him. When i was in the third grade I had a friend who was not adopted but his mom turned gay. So someone found out that he had two moms and it was spread throughout the School. He was my friend and he really wasnt that tough but when I just asked him about it he went on the defensive Screamed "its not funny!" then proceeded to throw my black ass across the playground. so yeah

There are about 1,400 legal rights granted to married couples, among them are the rights to:

Joint parenting, adoption, foster care, custody, and visitation (including non-biological parents)
Status as next-of-kin for hospital visits and medical decisions where one partner is too ill to be competent
Joint insurance policies for home, auto and health
Dissolution and divorce protections such as community property and child support
Immigration and residency for partners from other countries
Inheritance automatically in the absence of a will
Joint leases with automatic renewal rights in the event one partner dies or leaves the house or apartment
Inheritance of jointly-owned real and personal property through the right of survivorship (which avoids the time and expense and taxes in probate)
Benefits such as annuities, pension plans, Social Security, and Medicare
Spousal exemptions to property tax increases upon the death of one partner who is a co-owner of the home
Veterans' discounts on medical care, education, and home loans
Joint filing of Tax returns
Joint filing of customs claims when traveling
Wrongful death benefits for a surviving partner and children
Bereavement or sick leave to care for a partner or child
Decision-making power with respect to whether a deceased partner will be cremated or not and where to bury him or her
Crime victims' recovery benefits
Loss of consortium tort benefits
Domestic violence protection orders
Judicial protections and evidentiary immunity

However, many state constitutions ban same-sex unions of any kind. When in those states, same-sex couples are denied these rights.

Hmmm I see SmileyJ.

So, gay people should be allowed to get that legal contract or this world is really unbalanced! (I know it is)
