I've always wondered about Satan's actual position, and all the references I've read give slightly contradictory views, so they weren't much help, so I'll pose the questions that I'm wondering so I can hopefully get some answers to. I'll specify that I'm looking for Biblical fact, and not popular culture fact.
1. Satan gets addressed by so many different names, Lucifer, the Devil, etc. etc. yet I constantly see them get addressed with conflicting statements (different backgrounds, personalities etc. etc.). So I'm wondering if I picked up something wrong somewhere and that the names aren't all synonymous.
2. Assuming that the names are synonymous, Lucifer was an angel who rebelled against God (according to Judeo-Christian belief), yet he's now believed to be completely evil, which seems a bit odd. Also, I've heard that Lucifer was actually "corrupted" by a female called Lilith, though I believe that to be just a bunch of anti-women rhetoric. But if it's true, then Satan isn't in theory a bad person then. So why is there this belief that he's all-evil?
3. Lastly, if he is all evil, why did God delegate him to a position where he gets to torture individuals as punishment for his rebellion (unless you use Dante's Inferno mythology, in which case this statement is null, but I'm assuming not). That seems a bit counter-productive. That seems now like you're rewarding the man for rebelling against you, as he now has full access to an almost infinite amount of people to satisfy any sadistic urge he might have.
There's just so much lore and stories out there about Satan that it's rather hard to get all the facts straight, or at least partially right.
