Name: Xanthos
Xanthos was born into a poor peasant family. He was named Xanthos by his father in after the River God Xanthos, or Scamander to most mortals. Xanthos started helping his family at age 4 with house chores and by age 6 he was helping his father till their fields and pick the harvest. Xanthos worked dilligently by his father's side, never playing with the neighbour's kids. He would avoid interaction with others like the plague, instead divulging all his attention to his work and duties.
At age 8, a ruthless bandit lord named Sylin attacked Xanthos’ village. Xanthos hid to avoid the carnage and destruction brought upon his peaceful village, but could only helplessly watch as everyone he knew was slaughtered under the axe of Sylin.
After the battle, Xanthos wandered long and far, foraging food to stay alive. And when food was scarce, he resorted to stealing. Eventually, after many days, he arrived at a river. There was no visible way to cross it, so Xanthos decided to swim across. In the middle of the river, he was caught by a strong current and was swept downstream. Xanthos struggled to stay aloft for as long as he could, but eventually his head went under.
When Xanthos came to, he found himself in a strange place. It took him a while to realize it, but when the fish swam infront of his face he realized he was underwater. It was at this moment when he also came face to face with his namesake, the River God Scamander. Scamander had watched Xanthos from birth and noticed instantly that he was a unique child. He decided that he would raise Xanthos to be the heir to the position as the River God should he perish.
For the next 8 years, Xanthos lived underwater with the River God, and was taught everything that the River God knew. He gained momentous strength from continuously battling the rivers ebb and currents, and was taught hydromancy from the River God himself. But the most valuable thing Xanthos learned was the River God's personal fighting style, consisting of flowing, graceful motions which could soothe the spirit at one moment, and bring down the full fury of the tides the next. Though devastating already, combined with his hydromancy, it made Xanthos have almost demi-god powers. But the most important thing that the River God taught him was how the channel his thoughts through the water and be aware of everything that was taking place in his domain.
At 16, Xanthos was practicing his hydromancy when he detected something. Just at the far reaches of his thoughts, he detected a presence that was familiar and revolting at the same time. Xanthos concentrated harder on this vile intrusion and saw, with perfect clarity, the murderer of his parents, his village, his life, the bandit lord Sylin. The fury Xanthos felt rippled through the water, boiling the area around him. He gathered a massive amount of energy and, with perfect precision, conjured a gigantic wave, which swallowed Sylin into the realm of fear, pain, and doom.
The River God couldn’t detect Xanthos’ exact presence in the water for a week. Knowing where he was, on the other hand, was no problem. Further downstream, rage and pain of innumerable levels were being emitted. Scamander decided not to intervene on his pupil’s time of vengeance.
Sylin was believed to be found two weeks after his disappearance. Nobody was sure if they actually found him, as all they had found was body sliced neatly open down the middle. A message was spelt out on the ground beside him with his intestines. “The pain he suffered was only a fraction of the agony he put me through these last 8 years. My only regret is that he didn’t live that long to make up for it.”
Xanthos has now dedicated himself to the River God’s will, grateful for his revenge, but he's still tortured by his past, and is looking forward for salvation in the coming millennia.
