Squiziph: American healthcare in a nutshell. For the passed...well forever America has had a free market healthcare system in which it operates like any other buisness. The only way most Americans can afford healthcare is through insurance since the prices are ungodly. So we have insurance companies that people pay monthly premiums to who will then cover the brunt of the cost when healthcare is needed, much like you do, only instead of the government overseeing it all, it is an independent and profit driven (if not all out corrupt) corporation. This system is great for those who can afford it because they get premium care, but if you are one of the non-increadibly rich (the vast majority of Americans) your insurance will be full of stipulations that dictate what sort of treatment you can get, and where you can get it. If you can't afford insurance, your only real hope is to be very poor and qualify for government assistance, however this care is low quality and only available to the indigent. So the rest of us who cant afford insurance (like me
) are fucked and just pray to not get sick.
In our last election, one of the main reasons Obama won is because he was big on getting something done about healthcare, namely allowing for a government option so that everyone will be covered and nobody will have to go broke to stay alive and healthy. Since he won, he has been trying to get something done, several proposals have been drawn up, but each one has been up against very stern opposition from people more concerned with politics and profit than with doing what is right. Recently a very scant bill was passed, so there has been a minor victory, but honestly I dont know enough about it to comment on it.
Textbooks: Its sick, but everyone outside of the US should also know (probably already do) that out history books have always been shite, leaving out crucial facts and bending things in unfair ways. This is definitely the farthest it has been taken, and if it happens and I ever have kids I will give them history lessons at home. But yeah, nothing new really, just a bit worse than before.
