From my earlier years of reading a lot of Sci-Fi, my personal favorites were:
Isaac Asimov's Foundation - Series with a huge scope, spanning literally millennia. All the main characters are important historical figures for the universe depicted in the book. Immensely interesting because of how well fleshed out the politics of the world are. Not much of the futuristic technology is explained, most of the books are just dialogue, or thinking. Definitely really good.
Ender's Game series - Really popular, for good reason. I haven't read any of the books besides the ones in the main series, but they're fantastic. Most people know about Ender's Game, but Speaker For The Dead is a favorite among those who've read it. Xenocide and Children of the mind get really philosophical and bores some people, I still found them to be interesting, albeit for different reasons than the first and second books. Still definitely worth a read in my opinion.
