It depends on what kind of head you are going to make. I use my current head to recognize the proper position for eyes and the rest is just random for me.

If me, i'm doing it random. But for another parts (like hands, body, legs) i use the template once, then memorize it.

I'm still a beginner at gimp and I don't know how to use tools like smudge etc.
I can use the paths, pencil, paintbrush, fill in, zoom and scissors.
