The disscussion board and the odd way people talk on it.
O.k., I understand that this board is for formal debate. But really, why the hell do people feel the need to write like they are some sort of Victorian Englishman. Do you really say "Tis" irl? I mean I guess if you are Irish I can buy that, but I'm guessing for the most part you don't speak like that, so why debate like that?

Imo an argument is much more convincing when it is written in clear, modern language. It is one thing if you are talking about something technical, something that has a limited vocabulary surrounding it, but if you say "Tis a fantastic automobile which doth deliver frozen dairy products to the youth of my neighborhood" when you could just say, "I like the ice cream truck" you end up losing credibility because you are more concerned with sounding smart than making good point...

Just something to chew on.

exactly! seems like ppl fake it cuz they want to stand out in a certain way.
I can ride my bike with no handlebars.
I was raised in a traditionale English environment, and thus i feel burdoned to express myself as an english gentleman ought to. In fact i dictate unto my butler, who doth write my posts for me.

(but all the europeans/americans who speak like that can go fuck themselves. you know who you are.)
I prefer using good old Anglo-Saxon vocabulary, myself.

Actually, I always talk like that on the internet, when I'm not being retarded like in Wibbles.

And I do sometimes use that language IRL. Like, if I have a speech, I'll use those words to impress my English teacher. And it works...

Hah! This board is not even remotely close to being considered a 'formal' debate hub.

And why this is such a pressing issue exactly, I am still confused.. Often certain people will use larger words (hi) and more complex sentences to get their point across, and this is tested and observable in many categories of REAL modern formal debate. And it is effective.

If you can't stand that some people use more advanced language than they usually do, then well, dunno what to say to that.

I'm pretty sure this thread is directed at Americans, since it's not an american thing to say "tis", not towards lobster backs.

Yes, I went 1700's on your ass.

i've never said 'tis, and i've never seen anyone say 'tis on this forum, anywhere but this thread.

it wouldn't make sense to use it to me either, but on a formal debate/discussion forum, it makes sense to use formal language, or at least not internet language. but acting like an englishman or something just sounds stupid.
