Animals sense disasters
I've lately though about how animals can sense disasters that humans doesn't have any ideas of.

A famous example. The tsunami. The elephants began to move towards mountains before the tsunami came.
On a small island where uncivilized people lived, they knew that the tsunami was coming because of the birds abnormal behavior. All (or almost all) people on the island walked up mountains to survive the disaster.

What reminded me of this, was something that happened in Sweden. Some girls were riding horses in a stable. The stable collapsed. Luckily, they survived because the horses. A moment before the stable collapsed all horses ran to a corner of the house, where it didn't collapse as much.

How did the horses know that the stable was going to collapse?
How did the elephants know about the tsunami coming?
Not anything new.

Different animals have different sets of sense organs. Many hear noises at frequencies humans can't, and some can sense slight vibrations in the Earth to help them catch prey/avoid danger. Some birds (like rooks) sense approaching thunder (by increase in ozone i presume) and start to fly much lower (to avoid being the highest point)
Interesting answer. But I still think that what the horses did was extra strange. Imagine around 5 horses all running to a corner of a stable. If they heard a small crack that the girls didn't hear, how could they know that the whole stable was about to collapse?

Strange that they have a reaction much faster than clumsy humans, whose senses were dulled by heavy reliance on fancy technology for millenniums? Hardly
It is cool though.
I saw on the news today, in some recent study, that that cats can detect fear, cancer, all this other crap. I don't believe some of it to be honest, but I do believe that some animals have certain traits and instincts that make them capable to do so.
Cat's can detect fear yes. I had a cat for a long time (not anymore). When someone was scared of him and tried to pet him he scratched them.

Can you provide reliable sources for any of those examples? Because otherwise they are anecdotal and mean nothing
The horse source: http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/article6535767.ab
Unfortunately it is in Swedish, but here is one of the paragraphs translated with google translate. (With a small grammar correction from me, I didn't search it all for grammar mistakes though.)
Was rescued by the horses

The police told Aftonbladet that when the roof of the riding school began to bend, the horses became worried and ran away towards the part that didn't collapse.

- Thanks to the so fared the girls. They had all the angelic guard, and the help of their horses, "says Jan Strannegård, spokesman for police in Västra Götaland.

The girl and horse pinned was further away in the building.

In all rubbish, she managed to get out a hand and waved for help. The girl could be buried up to his father - but she ended up three feet to one side, she had been damaged very difficult, according to police.

Shocked ride liver and staff were taken care of by medical personnel on site during the evening.

The elephants saved lots of tourists too. I didn't know that.
