My first defense style head, I think it's my first true head.

Uh, i've loaded this page about 3 times, and i don't see a head.

edit: nvm, the head is pretty basic, a filter/smudge rape background, with a simple blocky mask. Needs more shading and detail, perhaps some shine to the eyes, and more on the back.

to me, it still looks bad.
Like bio said, basic smudging and some filters.
try to give it some scratches and torns in the mask.
with like smoke or blood (not colored red) coming out.

Yeah, make the background match the eyes. Maybe just make the whole head object oriented. Like with trim, side panels, mouthpiece, the works.

I have advice on how you can improve this head...Make the eyes blend with the head,only enough to make it seem part of the head and not just random shapes floating above it(use soft shadows for this-Darker towards the eyes and lighter towards the outer parts).Then add more details to it that will make it seem more like a mask (eg.outlines of the ears,but not hard outlines). Then add some sort of emphasis on the scar,but not to0 much.Then use a soft shading brush and fix up parts that don't blend.
