I see it. My guess is that this is the top of the skydome that is used when you're running shaders. If it is, then there's no way of switching it off.

That post has just confirmed my suspicions. Yep, it's the skydome. Try turning on a sky-rendering shader - e.g. blackholesun.inc - and you'll see what I mean. You can go above it, too.
