Toribash irc
What are you opinions on irc? Do you think people are too rude? Or do you think that noob goblins ask for it by acting like idiots? Either way, what do you think could be done to make irc a better place?

Personally I don't go on irc much, and when I have been on I haven't ever really been bothered. However I'm not 15 and saying something everyone considers stupid or something (granted I say enough stupid shit to build a house with), so my experience might not be the rule, but the exception. I know I have seen people get lit on fire, and that sort of thing has kind of kept me from trying too much to get involved regular irc use, I just don't like it and to me personally there has always seemed to be this sort of club mentality to it all. Basically irc reminds me too much of highschool.

The only reason i use IRC is because it is easy to communicate with other people. It has some nice features but there could be some better things in it.
I like it, good way for clans to talk to eachother without (needing) to download a client since it's on the website. But alot in some rooms it feels alot like a special club and stuff.

But I do like it.
Before I go on to making a comment I should ask. Do you mean/should we discuss the #toribash IRC channel, or Toribash's IRC in general?

I assume he's referring to #toribash, since that's where most of the more questionable behavior takes place.

Now, as for my opinion, IRC's always been a bit more exclusive than, say, the forums. There's a definite subculture of sorts established, and newcomers are usually treated as such. I think it would definitely help if people came in and acted like respectable adults, but let's face it: that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.

We've got nice channels set up for people who need help, and they can always make their own clan channels, but I'd say that people are making the mistake of trying to jump right into the thick of #toribash and get accepted right off the bat.

My advice-that-will-probably-not-be-taken: Start off slowly - introduce yourself nicely when you join for the first time, lurk a bit and see how things happen, then see if you can integrate. Don't jump in, flail around wildly, and then wonder why you get trolled/kicked/banned/trolled.

yeah, #Toribash. I have seen a lot lately about people getting made fun of and such, so I was curious.

I can see how that would happen Hanzo, and actually after some thought I realized that this sort of thing is pretty natural, and surely some of them did have good reason. I will say that it is unrealistic to expect kids to act like adults though.

My main reason for posting this is that I have been thinking about how this sort of thing affects Toribash as a business. But then I dont know if the goal is to have TB become popular or to have it remain as more a niche game.

I think you are totally right, but I don't think there is anything you can do about it.

Sure there is, have the moderators kick people for breaking rules, instead of kicking for lulz.

Ah, so we are talking about #Toribash. Okay then.

In that case I don't think that rudeness or other behaviors that would turn off new players is that much as a problem, as it would have been a few months ago. Since a few months back the area where chat was replaced by Help. I think it's fair to say that Judith (Relevant article: {Link}) joined before that change was made. So now it's likely that the only way for someone to find #toribash is to hear of it in-game or on the forums. Rather than being directly linked to it the second that they find the game.

So basically, now it's harder for someone to just suddenly dive in to #toribash. Without getting some sort of idea about the community. Slow transition that hanz0 mentioned is more likely to occur.

On a different note thou' when I first went into IRC I have to say I wasn't exactly the one that knew how to behave in #toribash (Hadn't even used IRC before, slap feature became interesting). But I felt just fine there; definitely not like I was being trolled or anything of the sort.

#toribash is one big shithole mostly, new people get made fun of and people who are generally hated on the forums get even more bashed at by higher up people, it has its moments though when some decent people actually talk.
