Well you can always use the c button, that works as well.

hover over a joint then press 'x' to hold or unhold

To use the mouse, go to options and change the one called mouse buttons or something to either 1 or 2, I never remember which of them.

Go to 'Setup'>'Options'>'Mouse buttons'.In the text box next to it insert the number 1.
