Electronics Idea
This probably shouldn't go in this board, but looking around I don't see anywhere else it would be suited better.

I am doing a NCEA Level 3 (New Zealand Qualifications) Electronics Course. During the entire year we are to work on a project and then send it off when we are finished. The project has to have an analogue input (motion, heat etc, real world stuff), a digital part in the middle (something to convert the input to a electronic signal) and then an output (analogue or digital, something could move, something could light up, anything goes).
It is a two person project, and we are in need of ideas. We have already thought up a few that include RFID chips, which are like NFC chips but a lot more range and like bluetooth chips but smaller range. These include stuff like unlocking a door when you get within the range if you have say, a bracelet with another RFID chip in it.

Any ideas will be appreciated. They can be along the same lines as wireless RFID, or anything else you can think of which would fit into the criteria.
If what I am asking is outside of your expertise, please refrain from commenting.
Thanks guys.

How about something that simply locks my computer when when I walk away from it.

That would be so cool.
You would need to code software for the script that would lock it, build some kind of USB device that is compatible with your computer AND the RFID chip that would reside on you.
A little complicated.

Anything else?

or something kind of more simplistic like truecrypt where you use encryption keys to lock a partition and unlock a partition from a usb drive.

the idea is that the usb drive is a key that unlocks your computer. but it would be awesome with something like an android phone connecting to bluetooth to unlock a partition and when it disconnects the partition locks again

just spitballing random ideas
You don't say?
Maybe if instead of unlocking your computer, you make it unlock a door. It would be simpler to program, but more complicated to build.
i have a totally post modern tattoo of a scalene triangle.

there is an open source house protocol before. something like a linux suite for controlling appliances. I forget the name though
...
i believe blam posted it actually, from what i was reading that's what it sounds like anyway

That was a first idea, but it is too simplistic for the standard.

Asked my teacher about the suggestions, he liked the idea of unlocking a partition using RFID, so thanks Organ. I also mentioned the Arduino, but he said it might be a little too complicated for us.
Another idea we got was creating some kind of Triangulating system that can be used domestically and on a smaller scale than those used by cell phone companies. He also liked that. Another student is making a little remote control car that will reverse and turn left/right when it hits something.

Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated, even if they are a little out of reach.
