I don't know why, but the beta seems fucked up like that, something to do with the trees, mang.

I set the render distance to short. I thought it would only load the shit from a short distance. Was I mistaken?

Thats normally what it does, but every few updates when Notch changes something about the trees, shit gets fucked and, uh, I don't fucking know how, maybe the coding is fucked up so its loading the tree scripts that are not visible when there is a lot of fog.
I don't know this shit, Notch is a horrible coder.

Maybe when on the higher render distances Notch has some protocol shit in place to help keep the game from flipping shits with lagging, but those are turned off when you go to a lower render distance.

Actualy he already has plans on decreasing lag by changing the way the save format works. Right now the game saves chunks in sizes 16x16x128. The new format will save in 32x32x128 chunks, requiring less chunk loading. There's already a mod that does this called mcregion, which i currently have installed, and it does reduce lag alot.
