Time to get a laptop!
Had my old laptop for around 5 years now, definitely time to upgrade @_@

I want something around 15" (17" is too big, 13" is too small :L), it need not be top tier, but it should have enough grunt to make it useful for more than web browsing.
It will mainly be used for browsing, occasionally compiling, 3d graphics, gaming (not high end), other assorted tasks that fall somewhere in between.

It doesn't need to have a lot of USB/Ethernet/Firewire/HDMI/Bluetooth/<Insert other port type here> or any special mumbojumbo like speakers/mic/3D/blueray/hell it doesn't even need a cd/dvd drive (bonus points if it doesn't!). Built in webcam would be nice though (I guess that is standard now anyway...).

I prefer <$2000, even more I prefer <$1000! But I do want enough power :L
Currently looking at XPS 15" and ThinkPad T or Edge (15.6").

I require suggestions!

EDIT: Configured a ThinkPad T510 to my liking; "AU$3,989.76" me:"goddamn too expensive", finds coupon "AU$2,222.65" much more acceptable

Comparing the ThinkPad to the Mac
Best is Underlined

Intel Core i7-620M Processor (2.66GHz, 4MB L3, 1066MHz) | 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) | OSX
15.6" HD+ Anti-Glare display LED backlight and WWAN antenna | MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
NVIDIA Quadro NVS3100M Optimus Graphics 512MB | Intel HD Graphics 3000
8GB DDR3 | 8GB DDR3
500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm | 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
9 Cell 2.8Ah Li-Ion Battery (10 hours+) | Built-in battery(WTF) (7 hours)
AU$2,275.45 | AU$3,508.19

What is your problem Apple

Even better, got the same deal for a 14.1" for AU$1,881.49.

First of all, I think you know enough about hardware to make a decision yourself.
Second; I know you don't need too much power, But I'd recommend customizing an ASUS ROG.
Probably the G53JW, as you want 15"

Interesting, that is one beast of a machine.

I am not too sure if a 15.6" will be too big.

Green = winner
Bold = how much better I estimate it is

ASUS G53JW-3DE :: AU$2,998.49
Processor--------------i7-840QM, 1.86~3.2GHz, 2.5 GT/s 45nm, 8MB, 45W x2-3
Display type-----------15.6 inch 16:9 1366 x 768 120Hz 3D-Ready (ne nVIDIA Wireless 3D Shutter Glasses Included)*
System graphics-------nVidia GeForce GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5 VRAM DX11 x3
Total memory----------16GB DDR3 1333 (4G X 4) x2
Hard drive-------------500GB Seagate XT 7200RPM Hybrid Drive x5

ThinkPad T410 :: AU$1,955.50 x0.66
Processor--------------Intel Core i7-620M Processor (2.66GHz, 4MB L3, 1066MHz)
Display type-----------14.1" WXGA+ (1440 x 900) 16:10 aspect with LED Backlight and WWAN antenna*
System graphics-------NVIDIA Quadro NVS3100M Optimus Graphics 512MB
Total memory----------8 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
Hard drive-------------500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm

*Screen is a toss up. Obviously the ThinkPad has way higher resolution on a smaller display, making it better quality. But the ASUS is 3D ready and a more standard 16:9 aspect ratio, and runs at a smooth 120Hz.

I also estimate that the ThinkPad looks better.

Now the choice comes down to this, to get the smaller cheaper machine, or the machine that is around x3 as powerful for $1000 more? Such choices...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220921 perhaps this could be an option?

sure it only has 4gb of ram but the processor is better than the thinkpad and it comes with a gtx 460M

the screen is 1920x1080. it's a 15.6" but still not a bad deal imo for 1,199.99 USD or 1,178.66 AUD

not sure how newegg prices for shipping though
You don't say?
oh :/ i'm not sure what websites do but i would try to search for that model if you can
