What exactly is Classified as Art (Art in General, Possible 56k Warning)
Really. What is art?

Is Art just a bunch of pictures?
No, it couldn't be.

Is Art any form of picture, literature, music, culinary skills, etc.?
Er..No.

Is Art any form of creative picture, creative literature, etc.?
I'd like to think so.

But then why is this considered "Abstract ART"?:

It seems to me to be silly color splashes of paint.

You may argue that there is some kind of, "hidden meaning" behind it, but how? Even if you can pull something out of your head, can it truly be a theory with a foundation, or some hair-brained scheme that sounds cool when you read it to yourself? This has me interested. Tell me what you think.
Tubby Tubba's Tubby Textures!
Cheap, Decent Cartoon Heads!
you seem to be asking more of, why do people consider this art, and not so much what art is
art isn't just paintings, an artist is someone who defies customs, I consider grafitti artists more of an artist then many painters. But art doesn't have to be something permanent like a panting either, many physical things have an artistic quality in the expression of oneself.
However to answer the question about modern art, most of it isn't art, its bullshit to rip off rich people who want to be deep.

Everything is art.

It may not be good art, it may not be art you understand, it may not even be art you can comprehend, but it is still art.

As Frunk said, art is about expression and craftmanship. Any form of expression, is a form of art. Paintings, drawings, stories, songs, dances, architecture, the code that makes up Windows, the monitor you sit infront of, conversations, heck even the posts we are making right now on this forum are art (albeit not the most impressive art form).

Anything in the world can be considered art. Some things are mass produced and commercialized, but are still art. Some things are mundane and inert, but are still art.

Also, remember not to over-analyse something. Perhaps the artist of the above abstract piece merely had no other thoughts coming to mind.
I think art, as Gorman said, is all around us. The thing is, it needs to be recognized as art. I think that boils down to interpretation. The art that is considered "high quality" is only so because it was interpreted as such.
Thanks.
The thing is, it needs to be recognized as art.

I think this perfectly sums it up.

This news story supports your premise;

Subway Stradivarius

I disagree.. just because something isn't recognized widespread as art doesn't mean it isn't. Art forms have to start somewhere, and most people will not understand them, unless of course you keep an open mind.
I loved the story gorman posted, I thought the most fascinating part was that it was the kids everytime who turn in curiosity, iv had this sort of experience too.
Many people just consider art to be what others tell them is art, thats why things like modern art can sell, people are told it has a high value and want to look good by 'understanding' it.
However I believe something doesn't have to be mainstream to be considered art, if a small amount of people can connect to it, I would consider it art.

if people needed to recognize art to call it art, we'd be stuck with painting walls with our fingers, art is anything with sort of a poetic meaning, basically

Indeed, I mean, only recently we have really began to accept video games as art, and they have brought in such an extensive multi-disciplinary team of people to work on them, many of them accepted as artists, and yet we could not accept the whole as art.

For something to be mainstream art takes a lot of pushing and shoving. Which is quite disappointing.

The perception of art appears to be completely dependant on context.

Of course, there are those who can perceive art even in the most mundane context. I once heard of a 3d artist who could appreciate the shine of his bathroom tiles, such was his understanding of the world around him.
