You need an OS. (windows, mac, linux etc.)
The rest is up to your needs.

You need an anti virus software and... a text editor. The rest is pure fun.

AVG Free, GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program for editing textures...), Winamp or Spotify or iTunes. And WinRar or 7-Zip, LibreOffice, Windows Live Messenger, Adobe Reader, Firefox or Opera. I think that's it for software. Otherwise, Google great free software that runs on XP. I have XP as well so you can be sure that these work on it.

Big problem, the Adobe stuff you must pay for. Rainbar is free, FL Studio you pay for. (I have a copy and it's quite fun composing with 9XXL) But really these are for people who want to do awesome things with their time.

This should help in some way...
