You really did a bad choice to cut off the muzzle flash. One common mistake I see is lowering brightness or painting with a black brush with low opacity over white light therefore making it grey. Grey light from a source that is not the sun does always look aweful. There is no obstacle between the muzzle flash and the "camera" therefore the original muzzleflash color will be visible. No muzzleflashes are grey no matter if there is fog between it and the camera. Remove the black shadows on the left side and your piece will look a lot better.
