Star Wars Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy.
As a first/third person shooter set in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, Jedi Academy puts the player into combat wielding a variety of firearms from the universe, as well as lightsabers and Force powers. The player can choose perspective for every weapon but the lightsaber, which can only be used in third person.
The shooter aspects of the game are standard, including a variety of projectile and energy weapons and explosives. Players have a health meter and a shield meter, which are replenished separately.
In both single player and multiplayer, the player character is a Force-user, who has access to a variety of Force powers in addition to his or her lightsaber(s). Powers include pushing and pulling, jumping, healing, lightning, and other abilities from the Star Wars universe. Force powers are categorized into Light (defensive), neutral, and Dark (offensive), and each Force power has three ranks. The power will increase in effectiveness with each rank. In both singleplayer and multiplayer, players choose how to rank up their powers, adding a layer of customizability. During gameplay, the player has a "Force meter" which is depleted when powers are used, and recharges when no powers are in use.

Jedi Academy places a heavy emphasis on lightsaber combat. The player can create a custom lightsaber by selecting a hilt and one of five blade colors.[3] The player can choose to wield a single saber, one saber in each hand, or a "saber staff" similar to Darth Maul's double ended lightsaber in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.[4] The different sabers each have unique styles and special moves. When using a single saber, the player can choose between three stances which affect the speed and power of attacks; if using dual sabers, the player can switch off the second saber and use the "Fast"-style single-saber stance.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is a first and third-person shooteraction game set in the Star Wars universe. It was developed by Raven Software and published, distributed and marketed by LucasArts in North America and by Activision in the rest of the world. Jedi Academy was released in September 2003 and received positive reviews, achieving an 81% aggregate score. In September 2009, the game was re-released along with its 3 predecessors through Steam and Direct2Drive.
Jedi Academy is powered by the same version of the Quake III Arena engine used in its predecessor, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, containing modifications to the Quake code to include lightsaber combat. In a new feature to the series, the player can modify the character's gender and appearance, and can construct a lightsaber by choosing the hilt style and blade color.
The player takes control of the character Jaden Korr, a student at the Jedi Academy under the tutelage of Kyle Katarn. The player must complete various missions assigned to them by Kyle Katarn and Luke Skywalker. There is a multiplayer mode that allows the player to play against other people over a network.

This game may be old, but it is one of the best star wars games ever created. (It's the only game with actual lightsaber combat!)

A good hundred or so people still play the multiplayer, and tons more play singleplayer with cheats on.

But to make this game less archaic, we have these:

Setting the graphics to the highest setting also helps.

and downloading new lightsaber skins and character skins isn't out of the question.

So who still plays/is thinking about buying this game? You can buy it for $10 or $20 on steam or at various computer stores.

Also, some more gameplay footage I filmed today.

Thanks for the compliment, first gaming chat thread

If you're considering buying this, I recommend you download the mods I mentioned, as this game can seem pretty archaic without them.
There's a mod for it called Movie Battles 2

I'm not sure how active it is at the moment - but 5 years ago there were 6+ full servers, and 10-20 with 6-8 people at almost all times.

Essentially it's Counterstrike round-based system, two teams, and you choose between several different classes (Such as Jedi/Sith, ARC trooper, Droideka, Bounty hunter etc. etc.) who all have their own set of skills and your goal is to do a certain objective. (for example, the most played map is the palace assault from the end of the phantom menance - your goal as the good guys is to get to the throne room, and you can hack a side objective to open up more paths to it - while your objective as the bad guys is to stop them)

It also pretty much revamps all the damage on all the weapons, along with a total rework of the saber system (it's a better idea to actually move as little as possible now when dueling, it has a block feature now / you can only deflect a certain amount of shots before you get hit by the other shots), as well as a rework of the force system so it's possible to out play a jedi/sith as a gunner class. In fact, unless you're great at Jedi/Sith you're probably better off playing as a gunner.

What's great about it is the fact that every life counts, and because of the different abilities/skillsets of the different classes you can pull some amazing things off.

Otherwise if you have some friends, and you want a in-depth (perhaps even a bit too complicated) saber fighting system, you can take a look at OJP (Open Jedi Project) - Movie Battles essentially took an old version of OJP's saber fighting system. Bring a friend because even at its peak OJP was rarely played.

The main appeal is how much you can do inside the OJP saber fighting system. The main appeal, to me at least, is that it's possible to attack and blcok at the same time - in fact, that's expected. Missing around 4-6 blocks in a row (you can change how many hits) will kill you. You can also do things like disarm and knock someone down on his feet rather than going for brute force. This system emphasizes being unpredictable and at the same time requires a great deal of mechanical skill.

Here's a short guide on the fighting system in OJP

http://z7.invisionfree.com/The_Rpg_Gamers/ar/t231.htm

(just read the quick start guide, the 8 guidelines - after you get them down you can read the entire manual afterwards - the most important thing you want to learn is the parry - if you manage to do a parry right, an animation of your opponent's lightsaber recoiling will play)

Here are the links ;p

I was thinking about getting this game a few months ago after they took down Original Xbox Live's Jedi Academy multiplayer.

Is there still a decent-sized community that plays this?

A few dozens play regular multiplayer, hundreds more play with KotF or the other total conversion mods/expansion packs.
Played through single player like 5 times, but never found any good multiplayer servers.
Still one of my favorite games tho.

Smack Bitches.
