When you make a head texture in 1024x512 you just make the drawing as if it were already ingame on the tori, when you upload the head texture onto a head it shrinks the texture back down to 512x512. It just makes it easier to add more details and make your proportions better so you don't have to guess and check your texture all the time.
It's kind of weird to explain, but its what i learned from Calamity and Jebus.
