Account purge
So, as I'm sure a lot of people know, toribash has a lot of accounts made. A lot of them are inactive even since 2008. If someone wants to chose a name, why should they pay 100k because some dude chose that name back in 2008, played a match or 2 and never touched it again ?. My idea is to somehow, delete the inactive accounts, maybe send an email/message to confirm the account is active. Please contribute with your ideas, as I know sending an email is not the optimal way, but I can't think of a better way as for now.

wouldn't all the accounts just be taken by everyone trying to make new accounts to either try to sell or to just own it
or even just make the account just to leave them alone for another 8 years
Put yourself in the place of a noob who just started playing yesterday, now imagine someone tells you 'Oh, you need to pay 100k to get the name you want because it's taken and inactive since 2007' I personally find it's not really fair towards them.

I agree with this though, take my name for example. This is the name that I was using for all the games I was playing when I signed up for toribash, but I had to replace the "o" with a zero, because someone made an account with the name Kohta and has zero Qi/post on it. So now I have to pay 100k just to get my name to how it should have been in the first place.

I support the idea of requiring email submission and confirmation to register an account. I also support the idea suggested by players stating that each IP address would only be allowed to have a certain amount of accounts created on it. The amount of alts created and just left is absolutely appalling and its even worse that there hasn't been something done about it already.

Honestly I would even go as far to say that I support a server wide deletion of all accounts under brown belt that have been inactive for one year.
AnimePlanetMyAnimeListDiscord: Kohta#1577 • NikosTunaPouffyAubreyGuessTenRythm
• No longer "active" on Toribash. Leave a PM if you need something, I'll eventually see it. •
• Crippled/Disabled girls are the best girls a guy could have. •
-snip-

but yeah, finders keepers

i'm pretty sure deleting accounts messes things up and deleting 2726648482729 accounts (or pming them) would probably be a pain in the ass

it's a nice way to sink tc, if u care about names that much

that sounds like a personal problem, and that idea to delete all those accounts is just absurd

So what I get from this suggestion is that you guy's don't want free name changes or a new name? You're suggesting really old accounts to be deleted after years of being inactive, but even then you'd need to change your name for 100k STILL, and you won't be able to because lots of people would take that name. You would have to take a few years and hope no one uses that account.

If the new players name is original, it's most likely not taken. If you wan't a really cool 3 letter-4 letter name, or a name that is straight up a word, the player shouldn't be surprised that it's taken.
The name change system seems fair and fine to me, if you wan't to change your name you should have to pay 100k, regardless of if the name you want is taken or not.
So I did a bit of math. I took a (very) high estimate of about 10,000 active players, and the (as of a few minutes ago) number of currently existing accounts (4,416,719) and found that ~0.23% of the accounts registered (a proportion of 0.00226412411) are even in use.

I feel like that number should speak for itself, but that's pretty ridiculous.

Decent point, but afraid it doesn't quite hold up in reality. When BuZe was added to BoS, a great number of accounts were perma'd, which included alts of both BuZe and Hypez. 96 accounts remain perma'd.

Say every active member made 100 (despite these two shitlords only having ~96 alts between the two of them, I'll go with the high number) new accounts after all the old accounts were purged. Using both the high estimates for how many alts people will make and how many active players there are, we're left with about 1,010,000 then-registered accounts. ~23% of how many accounts there were previous. And those are the super out there way high bound estimates... sooo?

I think you're the ultimate testament to the fact that people are naturally inclined to use their old accounts for namechanges & sink TC.

As for the deleting thing, yeah I remember hearing that was the case as well. Renaming all of them to [old name]_OLD would be fine, I'm guessing.

I'm here with a bit of faith they would somehow be able to automate the process, because yeah that'd be way too much to do manually.

Astute observation. This isn't about getting free name changes, it's about freeing up account names to new players, though? People will probably still want to keep their accounts with high QI, post counts, early join date, etc. in lieu of making new alts. They're more than likely prepared to throw in 100k for a namechange.

Well shit, I can't help but agree with you here! It's just too bad that nobody is actually criticizing how name changes are done, and that what you're saying really has nothing to do with the topic of discussion. Oh well, maybe another day.

Unless you somehow missed it, we're talking about purging accounts/freeing up old names of unused accounts, so that new players don't have to choose some stupid silly name like K0HTA with the intention of getting a namechange right fresh out of the gates.

I'm a bit embarrassed and disappointed how sarcastic and condescending this turned out, soz just blowing off steam from writing papers all day

So, you're suggesting that a couple of million accounts get a name change to name_old.
This of course can't be done by our 2 good admins (and the secret people above them). So it should be made by good guy devs with some sort of program.
If that's what needs to be done, you should need to set a standard to what is an unused account, and what isn't. Currently we always assume 3 years inactive=gone, but nobody can guarantee it so we still pay 100k. If you make it automatically, the risk they come back is still there, but it doesn't get compensated by anything (which is the 100k in case of a namechange.)

So there's 1 flaw.

Now there are people who just shouldn't be renamed cause they are famous but inactive. Not only talking about legends, deerhunter shouldn't be made available either for example. So they should make some kind of blacklist in the code, which takes alot of time to sort out who deserves to be in there, and who doesn't, ofcours there currently is something like that too right now, but people request a specific name and the admin can check every request individually to see whether it may be taken or not. So it's no msword document all admins have or something that can be implemented quickly (at least, never been an admin but I'm pretty sure that I'm close to the truth here.)

And as a last thing, it is some kind of unfair. Alot of people bought namechanges for this names, and alot of people had to pick names they didn't quite like before. So there are some guys going to say they want to be refunded, at least I'm expecting that there are dicks like that around here.

I just don't think it's the best idea, and pretty damn hard to make it work.
Hi

Yeah, maybe someone comes back and has lost it's name, but someone could pay 100k and take it right now. Doesn't really matter if the account purge happened right ?
Also, as far as I know, an account purge is not that "hurtful" since at Vibe's forum we've done it a couple times due to spambots.
