Original concept made by Sushiroll with the dojo designed by mainland.
shootboxing8.tbm is a competitive MMA/MAS mod loosely based off of the real world shoot boxing sport in Japan.
In the real world you score points by landing strikes and take downs in a boxing ring.
In this mod we got rid of the ring ropes and made a balanced mod that tests your skills in footwork, striking, and grappling.
Shootboxing Dojo
Note that the Toris start on a 5 degree incline. This will help new players learn to walk forward instead of falling backwards.
Because everything above the knee will DQ upon touching down inside the dojo - you must practice good balance in your striking or you can be countered with a takedown from your opponent and lose.
This makes it a good transition mod into MMA for aikido players because of the familiar DQ element which gives an advantage to experienced grapplers.
The mod is a good transition for xspar and RTB players as well because they can sharpen their flow and striking skills within the balance constraints of this mod.
The points system is designed to reward more points for striking critical targets similar to combat sports:
Shootboxing Points System
The '1's in each point award are intended to count each kind of strike to better understand what was scored in a match.
So if a fight ends with the final scoring being 14123 - you know that there was 1 head strike, 2 body shots and 3 leg kicks/upperbody shots scored.
Hopefully this mod will inspire more competitive realism in Toribash and serve the community well. I also hope to see this mod used in future auto-tourneys, clan wars, and events.
A note about cheesing
"Cheesing" is when a player gains a point, position, or striking advantage through unrealistic means.
Whenever a grapple is initiated there is almost always unintended points given to either player which are called "cheese points" or "grapple points".
These are unavoidable in Toribash and therefor the points system cannot be as perfect as I would want.
However an experienced player who encounters this can still win via realistic strategy.
It must be understood that when a player initiates grappling then they usually leave their head/body exposed to punches, elbows, or even knee strikes.
The player defending the takedown should take advantage of this weakness and score as many strikes as possible to counter any "grapple points".
This way the grappler should be forced to either win their takedown or lose the match by points.
Otherwise the grappler can win via cheese points without landing any significant strikes.
Then there is also the counter strategy of the striker scoring points on the outside and maintaining a far distance from any takedown attempts.
Be aware of all these conditions when you execute your shootboxing strategy.
