It's just a preview anyway, though. The actual movie is hi res.
EDIT: you can't see the glow with the transparent gif, since gifs don't support semi-transparency; just completely transparent and completely opaque. The alpha of the glow was clipped off, and the color seen through the transparent blobs doesn't match the page background, unless it's black.

I used blender. In this case, they are metaball particles emitted from the volume of a rhombicuboctahedron with fresnel and index of refraction, like jello, and a procedural bump texture.
It's not that hard; there are tutorials everywhere. Of course, if you have one of the really good commercial programs, stick with that, I guess. But some people actually use blender by choice, not just because they're cheap, so it must be almost as good as autodesk and stuff. Some things, like UV unwrapping, blender is superior with.
