Please tell me because is there any reason to have like 50 sub-genres for every type of music? The craziest part is that the number is still growing, and the genres are getting more and more specific.

Music evolves, it changes, but the past remains. That's why.

Well...you can't have just one or three genres in the world of music..I'm actually glad that there are so many genres, mainly because that gives the listener a WIDE variety to choose from.

People change and so does the music.

Most people only know a few genres anyways:

Rock
Pop
Country
Rap
R&B
Metal
Techno

Not many people listen to the obscure genres.

There are genres that only a few bands follow, and they're not very popular.
Plus, as SporeCc said, music evolves, and the past remains.

Half of the genres you see are practically dead, because they started as some trend, then they faded out.

Because people like to categorize things, people like nostalgia, and people like to pretend that they're "different".


You mean that there are >50 for rock/metal, and <10 for everything else.
