Many MMOs are almost purely combat based, and to get anywhere, you've gotta be good at killing things. They don't include any sort of real working economy, and any artisan based character won't ever be looked upon as 'decent'. I always found it fun to play as artisan type characters, but because they have low combat levels, they're seen as terrible.
An example of what I'd see as good is what is in Goonzu - Where your level ISN'T purely combat based, where all your skills are pooled together for your total level.
